The `Miles of Miles` staged by CAC in conjunction with Essex Championships again proved to be a popular event with good entries throughout the programme.

Going through the age groups and starting with the under 13 boys it was Mason Sanford up front winning in 5m 06.43s with Dylan Law on 5m 15.40s collecting the Essex silver medal with his second place. Also in this event Freddie Blacketer (5m 25.07s),in the `B`race Jake Sarse-Peacock and James Pollard were also representing the hosts. The girls race found Brentwood filling the first two position with Maddison Kindler and Sophia Davies with our Bella Kehoe (5m 33.72s) just missing out on the bronze medal. Leila Robinson, Scarlett Metcalfe, Jessica Hobson and Abigail Knight also saw that the hosts were well represented. Moving to the under 15 boys and it was Fred Ferman in 4m 40.61s  leading Jamie Gilbey for the awards. CAC`s Jake Boarer placed 5th in 5m02.77s with Joshua Humphries eighth on 5m 13.13s. In the girls under 15 there was success for Brentwood with the first two past the post with Summer Smith on 4m 54.44s followed by Heidi Woodley (4m 55.16s) with Lily Sanford taking third spot on 5m 10.07s with fellow Chelmsford members Erin Kelly, Francesca Phillips, Isabella Eida and Isla Kehoe following closely behind. From the under 17`s and it was one and two for Havering via Freddie Rowe (4m 36.47s) and Sam Horsley (4m 37.42s). This result was much in abeyance to the tape with Max Chivers (4m 38.72s) and Erin Kelly (4m 39.89s) placing 3rd and 4th close by for Chelmsford whilst Daniel Pollard, Jacob Parrott and Luke Webb following in were not far back. There was a clear winner from the women's race with Olivia Forrest taking the title with 5m 00.07s . Chelmsford`s Amelie Shipton on 5m 09.04s gained the silver placing with 5m 09.04s with Hetty Harrison and Jessica Walker also involved. In the senior men`s race Paul Grange (4m 31.02) led a CAC one two as Tom Rehall was close behind. The women's race was a mixture of age ranges and it was Kiera Atkinson (5m 03.03s) leading in with sister Kayleigh third. For the veteran men over 40  Will Parrott won in 5m 04.12s  and at over 50 level Lee Martin finished second in 4m 58.79s. It is noted that running unattached in the over 40`s a Sam Eida placed third, is he attempting to keep up with his daughter. Races for under 11`s were included in the programme and the Chelmsford Endurance Club were well represented with Jacob Smithyes in second place in the boys in 5m32.86s. Tony Hatt, Lewis Boarer and Ben Padfield also featured. In the girls Olivia Bilby was best placed in sixth spot with Hannah Hogben, Bailey Kehoe, Cleo Robinson and Coco Phillips also in the mix. Currently this age group is not recognised as an Essex Championship event.

Part of this year's Miles of Miles was the newly introduced Cornell Mile Challenge Cup, an inter club competition based on each clubs combined best position in each age category. It was contested this year by Brentwood Beagles AC, Colchester Harriers AC and us. It was nip and tuck all the way with us pipping it at the end. We are the first club whose name will be etched on the shiny new trophy and on top of that we were awarded £1000 by our sponsors Comms Express with Brentwood winning £500 and Colchester £250. The Cornell Cup will be contested again in 12 months time... Who's up for it next time?

At last the individual results from our home EYAL fixture are available, from the Power of 10, rather than the result sheets produced on the day and forwarded to all clubs. Pity that these have not been available to me for these would have shown how each age group aided our huge points tally of 882. Seeing the performances now all three age groups of girls and boys played their part in this huge win putting CAC in the driving seat to take the league title for a third successive year.

The under 17`s led the way with the girls only appearing in the top two of these events.  Amelie Scott and Chelsea Clarke took maximum points in the hurdles with Amelie winning the triple jump and taking second over the 100 metres. Chelsea won the high jump and was second in the long jump, The throws were dominated by Matilda Hewitt and Monica Malagala with maximum points from the shot putt and discus with Monica also first in the hammer event and Matilda winning the javelin. Of course there was solid support from others the only blot being no competitors in the middle distance races in which maximum points are generally normal. One can appreciate that in these events those featuring in the previous day’s Essex Schools which involved heats and finals should opt out. Pity that it seems that there is no back up for them as reserves.

The boys also excelled in the throws with Jeremy Anderson and Zak Williams scoring heavily. Austin Kelly and Max Chivers took full points from the 1500m whilst over 800m Joe Delaney and Daniel Pollard let only a solitary point being missed before pairing up in the triple jump and coming away with a similar result. Marcus Fazackerley and Dan Brown took full honours in the hurdles whilst the sprint pairing of Nathan Moses and Clarke Vernon in both 100 and 200 proved to go well. Harry Hughes took first place in the pole vault. For the under15 boys Bevan Dove recorded three firsts via the hammer, shot and discus - the later in the `B`string for Hector Johnson had taken the `A` result. Jake Read followed up his Essex Schools title with another win in the high jump and maximum points were gained in the 1500m via Jake Boarer and Josh Humphries.

For the under 15 girls Abigail McElroy won both 100 and 200m with the `B`strings also showing first placings. Having placed one and two in the previous day’s schools 800m Ava King and Erin Kelly moved down to the 300m and here claimed full points. Erin had doubled up having earlier won the 800 whilst the 1500 saw a win for Isla Kehoe. Maximum points from the hurdles via Cherrie Moss and Shindra Adeyemo with Shindra also covering other events with success. Zenobia Williams won the javelin whilst Olivia Mullineaux was perhaps one of the busiest athletes contesting shot, discus and hammer and placing second in each.

From the under 13`s Leila Robinson came up with a win in a personal best. Bella Kehoe over 800 also clocked a pb. In the 100m there was a win for Brenna Dosumu who also placed second in the high jump which saw LauraChandler winning the `B` string. For the boys Toby Stothard and Jack Armbruster took full points from the long jump. Mason Sanford and Dylan Law saw only one point slip away from the 800 metres but it was the consistency throughout the day which brought team success.

The Essex Schools championships staged at its regular Melbourne Park Stadium found  CAC athletes in great form as they came away with fifteen gold and silver medals plus another ten bronze. Fifteen must have been the number of the day as this equated to the personal bests achieved. Most striking event on the track has to be the 800 metres for from the under 15`s age group where we saw Ava King coming through first with a pb of 2m 14.44s whilst close behind Erin Kelly clocking 2m 15.08s also improved on her previous best. Completing those on the podium Lily Sanford with 2m 18.41s. Moving to the under 17’s Ezrah Harrold won in 2m 10.82s whilst in second spot Lottie Wilkin who had set a pb in the Southern championships only six days back now with 2m 12.64s improved on that. It was not only the girls excelling at this distance for Khaya Fakazi (under 15`s) placed third with a pb of 2m 10.38s. Another third place was gained by Joe Delaney in the U17’s in 2m 02.8s Moving to the 1500 metres Amelie Shipton in first place set a new pb of 4m 39.56. Francessca Phillips, under 15’s, was third  with a pb of 4m 46.25s. Under 17 Daniel Pollard with 4m 15.08s also notched up a pb. Taking second place from the under 15`s was Fred Ferman clocking 4m 20.20s.

In going for the 800`s as pick of the events on the track perhaps I do the hurdlers a miss judgement.. Just look at the hurdles. For starters the under 17 girls saw Amelie Scott winning in 11.60s, followed by Chelsea Clarke 11.91s, Milana Thorpe 12.35s and  Andie Brooks fourth with 13.65s. Going to the boys and Harry Lee took the title in 13.02s with Arun Sitars following in with a pb of 14.28s. Moving up the distances  Daniel Brown won the 400 with 57.28s whilst Alicja Yalaju placed third in the 300m with 48.36s.  Let`s put in the steeplechase in the hurdles bracket for it of course has it`s barriers, here Hetty Harrison finished second with a pb of 5m 39.63s.

Under 17`s over 200 metres brought a win for Lily Hartman in 24.80s with Jasmin Recasa-Lunn third (25.91s) and Evelyn Shonde fourth (26.39s). Abigail Nwakum in the under 15`s placed 3rd with a pb of 26.46s. Over the shorter sprint of 100 metres Abigail McElroy took second spot with12.74s.  Finishing on the track Max Chivers set a pb of 9m 23.55s placing third over 3000m.

The field events may come last in this report but they must rate equal with the performances. Over the high jump Charlie Pyner (U17) won with 1.94m and whilst Arsenii Handzil placed  4th with 1.85m lets remember that this was the height cleared by the two places above him. Moving down an age group Jake Read took the title with a pb of 1.80m. With the hammer and Bevan Dove reached 40.09m for a pb in the under 15`s for second place but in the upper age Joshua Babalola lifted the title with 51.56m. The girls under 17 saw Maddison Poulter placing second with 37.58m. The discus provided two champions in Olivia Mullineaux (u15) with 29.83m and Lily Frost (u17) with 27.60m. In the under 17 shot Matilda Hewitt (13.90m) and Monica Malagala (13.82) took the top two spots whilst in the younger age group Shindar Adeyemo with a pb of 10.82m set a pb. With the boys under 17 and Jeremy Anderson also achieved a pb as he won the event with 14.58m. To the javelin and Zak Williams won the under 17 boys title with 54.61m whilst at this age group Zenobia Williams in the girls event took second place with a pb of 29.45m. At the pole vault Harry Hughes placed second with a clearance of 3.00m. There was also a second place for Everlyn Platts (u15) in the long jump with 4.86m whilst Amy Pugsley (u17) placed third in the triple jump with 10,67m.

The second part of a busy weekend at Melbourne Park saw an EYAL fixture with Chelmsford out to take another win in the pursuit of retaining the league title for the third successive year. Although no individual performances have come my way despite being a home meeting the league web site shows that with 882 points we were well clear of SS/Enfield on 755. Other clubs were Ipswich 612, Thurrock 588, Colchester & T 394, Ilford/Orion 366 and Bedford Lyons 185. The league placings now put CAC on 21 points with match points of 2504 for the three meetings to date. The next four clubs are on 19 points with Norwich best placed with 2288 match points.. With our last fixture at Luton the best placed opponents are Herts. Phoenix in eight place.
