A New National Champion and Brilliant Performances at the U20/Senior Championships.

The English championships at Birmingham provided Alastair Brown with his first National title having twice found himself in the runners up berth in the English Schools shot putt event. Now his effort of 16.76 metres put him well him well clear of the opposition for the under 20-year title. Also contesting these championships Edward Hughes can be well pleased with his performances for being first year in this age group he qualified for the 400m hurdles placing second in his heat with 55.31s and the in the final set a personal best clocking 53.50s for fourth place. Others contesting finals were Jacob Hurrell in the 1500m and his 3m 53.40s brought him through for third place, Joseph Grange running in the 5000m (which included seniors) placed sixth overall, but fourth under 20 with his time of 15m 02.87s. In the field Oliver Graham's hammer throw of 58.12m placed him eight in the senior age group. Four other members involved in the heats of this major meeting included James Becker who progressed through to the 200m semi-final and in this clocked a pb 21.73s having previously run in the 100m. Sam Lawson also covered both these events having times of 11.46s and 23.06. Bradley Reed was to place fifth in his heat of the 110m hurdles. Georgia Tombs was our sole female in these championships running the 200m in 26.54s and the 400m in 57.14s.
